The Ultimate Fighting Championship returned to Canada in a big way on Saturday night, with UFC Fight Night 89: MacDonald vs. Thompson at The Arena at TD Place in Ottawa, Ontario.
An action-packed night capped off with two great performances in the welterweight division.
In the co-main event, Donald Cerrone put together the most impressive outing of his career as he picked apart former middleweight title contender Patrick Cote en route to a TKO finish in the third-round. With the win, Cerrone became the first man to stop Cote with strikes in his career.
Finishing off the night was top 170-pound contenders Stephen Thompson and Rory MacDonald. MacDonald was entering the final fight of his current contract, but the night did not go as planned in front of his home crowd. Thompson was able to control the fight at range on his way to a decision shot that will likely earn him a shot at the title.
Also on the main card was a Fight of the Year contender between Steve Bosse and Sean O’Connell, while Joanne Calderwood impressed in the UFC’s first ever women’s flyweight bout.
