Former Baylor Bears defensive end Shawn Oakman has been indicted in McLennan County on Wednesday morning on a sexual assault charge stemming from an incident in April of this year.
While Oakman has been indicted on the charges, his attorney issued a statement maintaining his innocence.
“Shawn Oakman maintains his innocence in regard to the recent accusations made against him, and he insists that the sexual relationship in this case was consensual,” Oakman’s attorney Michelle Tuegel told the Waco Tribune Herald.
“It is unfortunate that this situation has been lumped in with other events that are unrelated. It is important that we not rush to judgment. Every citizen accused of a crime in this country is presumed innocent unless the state proves the accused offense beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. We look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Oakman and presenting the facts involved in this situation.”
Oakman, who is Baylor’s all-time sack leader, went undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft after the reports of his alleged sexual assault against a Baylor student came to light.
This incident occurred shortly before the large sexual assault scandal that surrounded the Baylor football program this season and ultimately led to the firing of head coach Art Briles.
