USC QB Max Browne ‘surprised’ by benching

Late Monday night, it was reported that Sam Darnold would be getting the start at quarterback for the USC Trojans when they take the field against Utah this weekend.

Max Browne, who started the team’s first three games of the seaosn, spoke with ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura and said that he was “surprised” by head coach Clay Helton’s decision to go with the younger Darnold.

Browne said he felt like he did pretty well through their first three games so it came as a shock to him.

“When you’re losing ball games it’s not easy on anyone,” Browne said. “After I watched film I was better than I thought, and so it surprised me for sure, I’d be lying if I said otherwise.”

Darnold was a four-star member of USC’s 2015 recruiting class, but hasn’t seen much time this year after redshirting last season. Browne feels like he won’t be getting the call to take the field as the starter for some time now that the switch has been made.

“I know how these things work, usually once the young guy goes you know how it is. I’ll be ready to go, I owe it to my teammates and the guys I’ve been with here for four years now. I will be ready at a moment’s notice.”

Through three games, Max Browne has thrown for 474 yards and two touchdowns against two interceptions. The Trojans have been outscored 79-16 in their two losses to Alabama and Stanford, so that may be why they made the switch.

The Trojans take the field against the Utes on Friday at 9 p.m. EST on ESPN.
