South Carolina Hoping to Sign Everett Golson

Now that he has announced he will transfer out of Notre Dame, quarterback Everett Golson is probably the hottest commodity in the world of college football graduate transfers. If you ask Bleacher Report’s Barrett Sallee, the South Carolina Gamecocks are probably the team that wants him the most.

A source inside the South Carolina program told Bleacher Report that the program is interested in Golson and that Golson’s camp has known of the school’s interest in the quarterback since December. However, South Carolina has not been in touch with Golson since he officially announced that he is leaving Notre Dame, and it is likely that the rising senior is still working through the proper release paperwork.

QB-needy teams like LSU, Florida, Alabama and Georgia are also interested in Golson, but South Carolina would potentially be a great fit for the fifth-year senior from Myrtle Beach. Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier runs a system that favors quarterbacks that can run, and the team enjoyed three successful seasons with mobile QB Connor Shaw under center. Over that stretch, South Carolina was 33-6 and had a bowl record of 2-1.

Enter Golson, who threw for 5,850 yards and 41 touchdowns while rushing for 581 yards and 14 scores in two years under center for the Fighting Irish. Throw in that the Gamecocks went 7-6 (3-5 SEC) last year and are in need of an upgrade at quarterback, especially now that Dylan Thompson has graduated, and Golson becomes an even better fit.
