Allen Iverson might go down in infamy for his quotable quotes more than his hoops game. (Seriously, the anniversary of his “practice” speech is a social media holiday in the sports world.)
So you can go ahead and add his most recent gem to that list as well.
A.I. is still trying to get a job in the 76ers front office and reportedly has backing from former coach Larry Brown for an assistant GM position. Iverson’s most recent comments on the matter, captured in an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer, are as follows:
“To me, I am a basketball genius and I really believe that, so at any capacity I could help this franchise, that is what I am going to do, whatever they ask me to do.”
A genius you say? Let’s not give ourselves too much credit now, shall we?
To Iverson’s credit, his adage leading up to said quote was a little more self-depricating, even admitting to the Inquirer that he wouldn’t be of much help in a recruiting position right away because apparently doesn’t watch college basketball.
“I may not know everything about physical talent or anything like that, but I have a sharp mind when it comes to that look, being able to look into somebody’s eyes to tell if they are going to be in the foxhole with you tonight or if they are not.”
Don’t sell yourself short, A.I. we’re sure a genius like you can get real good at spotting “everything about physical talent.” It’ll just take a little–what’s that word?–practice.
