NHL demands $8M for ads on World Cup of Hockey jerseys

Per Yahoo Sports, the NHL and NHLPA are requesting a steep advertising fee for companies that wish to participate in filling NHL jerseys for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey in 2016. The decision to stamp a logo on a jersey, which will premiere in a player media tour in two months, will ring up $8 million.

A move that could generate upwards of $120 million a year for advertisers, a corporate sponsor patch on an NHL jersey is only the first step. Another idea that resonated with advertisers is the utilization of a technology called “digital billboard replacement.” When simplified, that means T.V. viewers watch ads that don’t correspond to what those in the arena see.

According to the NHL and the NHLPA, the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, which will be played at Air Canada Centre, will inject $100 million of revenue over a three-week period.

The tournament, which is set to take place in Toronto and not New York as initially planned, will feature eight teams (two All-Star teams, the United States, Canada, the Czech Republic, Russia, Finland and Sweden). The 2016 World Cup of Hockey marks the return of the tournament since its last competition in 2004.

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman on the World Cup of Hockey:

“A two-week, best-on-best international tournament that promises to be one of the best competitions in hockey history,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in describing the vision for the World Cup. “Everything we’ve been focused on has been to make this a great exciting tournament. A North American Youngstars team and a team of the best NHL European players from outside the ‘Big Four’ European countries enables us to include more of the very best players in the world who might otherwise have been left out of the competition.”
