Preseason Lombardi Award watch list announced

The Lombardi Award watch list was announced on Tuesday, and it includes 144 names.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Presented by the Rotary Lombardi Award Committee, the award is open to “down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage.”

Yes, it’s quite the mouth full.

Last year, Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright III took home the honor as a sophomore. As a junior, he headlines this years list along with notables like Ole Miss’s Robert Nkemdiche, Michigan State’s Shilique Calhoun, Baylor’s Shawn Oakman, and Ohio State’s Joey Bosa.

The list also includes two freshmen, LSU’s Toby Weathersby and Texas A&M’s Kingsley Keke. Weathersby, a 6-5, 295 pound guard, was rated as a four star prospect by ESPN in 2015. Keke, a 6-3, 290 pound defensive tackle, was also given four stars by ESPN. Both made the list because they were finalists for the Greater Houston High School Rotary Lombardi Award.

As far as teams go, Notre Dame led the way with seven nominations. Ohio State came in second with five nominations and Baylor, Boise State, East Carolina, and UCLA tied for third with four.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about these lists is that often times, small schools outnumber traditional powerhouses. For example, Conference USA member Florida International had two players make the list (Michael Wakefield and Denzell Perine) while Florida’s Antonio Morrison was the only Gator.
