With the news that Braxton Miller is set to make a move to H-back in 2015, the Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback competition will come down to J.T. Barrett and Cardale Jones.
However, could Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer have a different plan in store?
Meyer told Eleven Warriors that he hasn’t ruled out using a “specialty quarterback.” That wasn’t all. Meyer also hinted that he would consider using all three quarterbacks on the field… at the same time.
Yes,” Meyer said when asked about using multiple quarterbacks.
He was later asked, “at the same time?” to ensure his words were not taken out of context. He also responded to that question with a “yes.”
If the team does just decide to go with one signal-caller, it will be a very thorough and informed decision.
“Basically, we’re keeping score of everything. And everything, obviously, multiplied when you start adding 7-on-7 mini field, third-down periods, and all that,” Meyer added. “So it’s going to be — I probably — when I say there’s not a gut instinct involved, there will be. But there’s also going to be a lot of statistical data that we chart and watch very closely. And they’ve earned that right.”
It will be interesting to see how everything plays out in Columbus.
With Miller switching positions, there is a real chance we will see him and one of the other quarterbacks on the field at the same time. If all three step out of the huddle, it’s going to be very interesting to see what Jones draws up.
It’s a very good problem for Meyer to have and he summed it up perfectly.
“I’m the most fortunate coach in the country,” he said.
