Kevin Sumlin addresses Manziel-Murray comparisons

The Texas A&M Aggies haven’t even named a starting quarterback for the 2015 season yet, but that didn’t stop head coach Kevin Sumlin from addressing the comparisons that freshman QB Kyler Murray is drawing to former Aggies star Johnny Manziel.

It started after Monday night practice, when Brent Zwerneman of the Houston Chronicle posted a video of team offensive coordinator Jake Spavital making the comparison himself.

It’s hard to ignore the similarities between Manziel and Murray, a five-star recruit out of the Dallas area who has a small build at 5-foot-11, 178 pounds and can create offense with both his arm and his legs. Manziel was similarly built and became a household name with his ability to complete deep passes and also run the ball.

Sumlin then chimed in, telling Zwerneman that the only real reason Murray is being compared to Manziel is due to their similar skill sets.

Needless to say, if Murray is the starting man under center for Texas A&M’s season opener against Arizona State on September 5, expect him to be under the microscope and then some as the Aggies look to find their next great quarterback following the era of Johnny Football.
