Georgia Wide Receivers Out vs. Clemson

Georgia is experiencing a bad case of deja vu, as coach Mark Richt announced yesterday that two of his starting wide receivers will be out this Saturday against Clemson. Malcolm Mitchell and Justin Scott-Wesley will not play this weekend and for Mitchell, this is all too familiar territory.

Last season Mitchell suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a touchdown celebration against Clemson and sat out for the remainder of the season. He reinjured that same knee during summer camp and had arthroscopic knee surgery on July 31st.

Scott-Wesley will sit out because he is serving a suspension for a marijuana arrest this offseason.

Both Mitchell and Scott-Wesley are explosive, breakaway receivers and will be sorely missed on the field, however the Dawgs have tolerable other options at the receiver position. Michael Bennett, Chris Conley, and Reggie Davis were announced as the starting wideouts for this weekend. With inexperienced quarterback Hutson Mason starting on Saturday he’ll look to the veteran tight-end, Bennett, to step up and make plays.

Bennett finished the 2013 season with 41 receptions for 538 yards and four touchdowns. Conley, who led the team last year in receptions and receiving yards will hopefully make a difference on offense as a deep threat against Clemson.

Scott-Wesley is expected to only miss one game for his suspension, however it hasn’t officially been announced. The timetable for Mitchell’s return has not been disclosed, but the injury doesn’t appear to be as serious as the one that ended his season last year.

The Georgia Bulldogs are set to kickoff against the Clemson Tigers in Sanford Stadium at 5:30pm on Saturday and will be broadcasted on ESPN.
