Boston College Eagles quarterback Darius Wade suffered a broken ankle in last night’s game against Florida State and will miss the rest of the season. Pete Thamel of SI.com reported the update on Wade’s injury.
A sophomore from Middletown, Delaware, Wade had thrown for 232 yards and two touchdowns this season in BC’s run-heavy offense. He also had 73 rush yards. At the time of his injury, he had completed just 4 of 12 pass attempts for 47 yards and an interception.
The most likely candidate to take over for Wade is true freshman Jeff Smith, who was 2 of 3 for 18 yards last night before being replaced by third-stringer Troy Flutie, nephew of Boston College legend and former NFL quarterback Doug.
Smith is definitely a better fit in coach Steve Addazio’s offense, having rushed for 89 yards in the team’s 76-0 win against Howard last weekend, but he is inexperienced. Flutie, on the other hand, knows the offense and seems like a natural leader despite being a redshirt freshman.
Both men are likely to play next weekend against Northern Illinois, but Addazio should roll with the man who gives BC the best chance to win and can do more than just use his legs effectively while Wade is out.
Campus Sports will update Wade’s recovery as more information becomes available.
