Michigan State may have upped its record to 3-0 on the season with its win over Air Force today, but received some sad news regarding its secondary. Per Joe Rexrode of the Detroit Free Press, starting cornerback Vayante Copeland told teammates that he would miss the rest of the season due to the neck injury he suffered against Oregon last weekend.
Copeland’s teammate, defensive back Demetrious Cox, expressed his disappointment at the news.
“It broke my heart when he texted us and said he was out for the season,” Cox said. “It was shocking, especially a younger guy who has come so far. He’s making plays, obviously, and it was tough. But it’s the next-man-up mentality. No matter what happens, somebody’s got to be able to step up and make plays.”
A former three-star recruit out of Thurgood Marshall High School in Dayton, Ohio, Copeland appeared in two games this year as a redshirt freshman and posted seven tackles with an interception. Neck injuries are no joke, so sitting out the rest of the season to recover is easily the best decision.
Campus Sports will update Copeland’s recovery as it progresses and more information becomes available.
Michigan State takes on the MAC’s Central Michigan Chippewas at home next Saturday.
