Hometown: Hogansville, Georgia

School: Callaway High School

Godwin’s football abilities are in high demand around the Southeast right now. The coveted five-star recruit, currently a solid University of Georgia verbal, is still being heavily recruited in the Southeast and nationally. After a stellar junior season, Godwin’s stock has continued to rise during this 2014 off season. After dominating most of the competition at off season camps and workouts, Godwin has scouts drooling. Below we cover all the strengths and areas of improvement for the talented prospect in our Campus Sports Recruiting Spotlight.

Strengths:

Versatility: Godwin is a versatile football player who possesses SEC potential at cornerback, wide receiver, safety, and as a return specialist. Godwin has the size, speed, strength, and flexibility needed to the play these different positions and play them well. Godwin has had major success at all of the above in high school, his versatility should translate well into the SEC where he is likely to take snaps at different positions.

Explosiveness: While there are many prospects who can blow you away with their straight line speed, Godwin possesses an explosiveness that is uncommon in most recruits. Godwin’s first step off the ball beats the man across from him on virtually every snap. Godwin has the ability to get off the ball quickly, change direction, and stop on a dime. While at receiver, Godwin makes cornerbacks feel as if they are on roller skates. At corner, Godwin sticks with his man like glue creating matchup nightmares for opposing offensive coordinators. His explosiveness can be seen on tape and in his high school film particularly in the return game. His 4.66-40 yard time may not blow anyone away on paper, but Godwin consistently burns the competition on the field leaving his 40 time of little concern to SEC coaching staffs.

Ball Skills: Godwin has the ball skills necessary to make plays on the ball on the perimeter. Godwin uses his football savvy and leaping ability to locate the football and catch it at its highest point. As evidenced by his numerous circus and one-handed catches as well as his performance at off-season camps, Godwin has spectacular hands that leave scouts bewildered. Godwin makes many of his plays on the ball while moving and contorting his body in the air. His unique control over his body gives him the ability to adjust to the football more effectively when it is in the air.

Areas of improvement:

Weight: Godwin’s most recent weight checks in at 168 pounds. Between now and his freshman season, Godwin will need to add on weight in order to be SEC ready. At 6-0 Godwin has the height advantage but does not quite have the muscle mass needed, particularly if he plays defense in college. Although a concern now, most SEC coaches are confident they have the strength and nutrition programs necessary to get Godwin to the optimal weight by the time his freshman season rolls around.

Final word:

Godwin is a world-class athlete who will likely find success at the highest level. With over 20 offers, he is coveted by some of the most prestigious college football programs in the country. With the proper coaching and maturity Godwin has the potential to be a future All-SEC player and potential first round draft pick at both receiver and corner back. The most difficult question to answer regarding Godwin is not if he will be successful, but at what position he best fits. The answer could depend on a number of criteria including team needs, coaches’ preference, depth chart, as well as his personal development. Look for Godwin to make an immediate impact his freshman season for the Georgia Bulldogs if his current commitment holds true.
