There’s no question the Alabama Crimson Tide are loaded with talent. Still, however, head coach Nick Saban wasn’t sure which quarterback would start Saturday’s season opener against the West Virginia Mountaineers. He has Blake Sims and Jacob Coker to choose from, one a fifth year senior the other a Florida State transfer.
The veteran coach made the decision to go with Sims under center, but did not name him the starter past Saturday. Sims and Jake Coker are in the midst of an ongoing audition for the top spot on the depth chart and Saban said we should expect to see both against WVU.
The two quarterbacks complement each other’s playing styles very well. Sims is a read-option quarterback who can play with his legs, while Coker is a classic pocket passer. Coker has spent the last few months playing catch up to Sims who has a much stronger familiarity with the system.
It’s unclear when Saban will decide on his future quarterback, but we do know that Sims will get the first chance to prove himself on Saturday.
