Big Blue Nation is close to breathing a collective sigh of relief as coach John Calipari gets set to sign an $8 million, one year extension. The contract extends Calipari’s current contract through the 2022 season.
Even though the extension is only one year, it speaks volumes of where Cal’s coaching intentions and interests lie in the coming years.
Over the past several years, Calipari’s name has seem to be attached every major NBA head coaching vacancy. While many rumors in past years were less feasible, recently talks of Coach Cal’s move to the NBA appeared more realistic, especially after a sub-par 2016 recruiting class by Cal’s standards (still top 5).
After news of the firing of New Orleans Pelicans’ head coach Monty Williams, the possibility of Calipari leaving became as real as ever. What a great landing spot coaching former Wildcat’s Tyreke Evans and budding NBA superstar Anthony Davis!
However, now it seems that Calipari intends to continue building a basketball powerhouse in Lexington, much to the pleasure of Wildcat fans everywhere.
