VA Tech RB Marshawn Williams eying return against Buckeyes

The Virginia Tech Hokies open the season against the defending champion Ohio State Buckeyes on Labor Day, and it appears that nobody wants to appear in that game more than Hokies rising sophomore running back Marshawn Williams.

Williams tore his ACL last November and in an update posted to the university’s official athletics site, he gave an update of his own regarding his recovery.

“My knee is fine,” Williams said for a featured update on Virgina Tech’s athletics website. “I’m getting better, getting stronger. I’m able to run almost full speed. I would say I’m 80, 85 percent in my mind. I don’t know what they’d [the sports medicine staff] say. But I should be ready, hopefully.”

Prior to his injury, Williams ran for 475 yards on 124 carries, scoring four touchdowns along the way. He also added four receptions for 18 yards.

Virginia Tech would go 1-1 for the rest of the regular season before defeating Cincinnati in the Northrop Grumman Military Bowl, but fans know just how much Hokies coach Frank Beamer values the running game in his system. Going up against a Buckeyes team that finished 45th in the nation in rushing defense, having Williams back could end up being a great boon to a Virginia Tech team that handed the defending champions their sole loss last season.
