June Jones hired as OC at Hawaii’s Kapolei High

Former Hawaii head coach June Jones is returning to paradise, this time as the new offensive coordinator at Kapolei High School in the Honolulu area. Jones’ hiring was announced by Kapolei head coach Darren Hernandez and reported by Billy Hull of The Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Jones, 62, will take over for Galu Tagovailoa, whose son Taulia is Kapolei’s starting quarterback and whose older son plays at the Saint Louis School in Honolulu. Jones also coached the Rainbow Warriors for nine seasons and went 76-41 (47-24 WAC) with two conference titles. Jones is also the last Hawaii coach to lead the team to a bowl win, against Arizona State in the Hawaii Bowl in 2006.

Jones would leave Hawaii to coach SMU after the 2007 season and remained with the Mustangs for six-plus seasons before resigning in 2014. This isn’t the most ideal homecoming for him, but it’s nice to see Jones back where he belongs regardless.
