Wisconsin recently gave interim men’s basketball coach and longtime Bo Ryan assistant Greg Gard the full-time job, but Campus Rush has some interesting information as to how the coaching search went down.
Per the report, as told by Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez, a number of people applied who for the head coaching position despite not being overly qualified went so far as to reference Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s success in the primary race and their admiration of it for why they should get the job.
A local reporter named David Hookstead put a picture of Trump in with his cover letter and called it “the best representation of the winning attitude I’ll bring to Madison,” while someone named Jeremy R. Jewett used Trump’s slogan “Make America great again” and said he’d build a wall around the state of Wisconsin (at Illinois’ expense) so that the best in-state recruits wouldn’t play elsewhere.
In one extreme case, a bartender from Minnesota called himself “the Donald Trump of basketball.”
Thus, here’s some advice for everyone. If you’re applying for a job, best not to reference Donald Trump as a reason why you should get it!
