It was reported yesterday that Texas Christian had reached out to longtime Pittsburgh coach Jamie Dixon to be its next head men’s basketball coach, and a tweet from SNY’s Adam Zagoria reports that Dixon is seriously considering the offer.
Why? Well, apparently TCU has offered to double Dixon’s salary.
Dixon certainly has plenty of incentive to take the TCU job despite having been at Pitt for the past 13 years. Besides the money, the prospect of returning to coach one’s alma mater is always enticing. More importantly, the AD that hired him at Pitt is no longer with the university and Dixon tends to draw the ire of Pitt fans after only reaching the Sweet Sixteen twice during his tenure with the Panthers.
It’s also worth noting that Dixon’s philosophy of strong on-ball defense and not necessarily relying on jump shots isn’t exactly as strong a fit in the fast-paced ACC as it was in the old Big East. In the more moderately paced Big 12, Jamie Dixon could be just what the doctor ordered for a Horned Frogs squad that hasn’t made the big dance since 1998.
Given how Dixon’s salary would also jump from $3.2 million to $6.4 million, he has plenty of reason to strongly consider the offer.
