Derrick Henry: ‘I can’t keep no weight on’

Former Alabama running back and reigning Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry is built like a military tank at 6-foot-3, 242 pounds, incredibly big for a running back, so it was incredibly surprising when he admitted in an interview with Brooke Cersosimo for NFL.com that he has trouble keeping weight on.

“I can’t keep no weight on,” Henry said. “I try to eat as much as I can to maintain the weight. [I usually eat] grilled chicken, broccoli, steak, mashed potatoes, just stuff like that.”

This is definitely a surprise, as one would assume that someone of Henry’s size would almost definitely have quite a large appetite and have no problem packing on a few pounds when necessary. Apparently, at least for Henry, it isn’t that easy.

But it also makes sense. Henry is built leanly and is also incredibly fast, having run a 4.54 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, so odds are greater than none that he has a high metabolism and just burns through calories naturally.

Hopefully, once his NFL career begins later this year, he’ll either find an effective way to add weight or whichever team drafts him will find a way to work around the issue.
