Baylor adds ‘Real Men Respect Women’ sign to practice field

Baylor University’s football program is currently the subject of a lawsuit filed by a woman claiming that the school did little to nothing to aid her after she reported being raped by a football player, and it has responded with a small step forward.

At the Bears’ practice field, a sign that reads “Real Men Respect Women” can be seen on a fence.

A picture of the sign was posted to Twitter by Shehan Jeyarajah of The Dallas Morning News.

“Real men respect women, but they respect men also,” head coach Art Briles told Jeyarajah. “Children are usually the first to catch the wrath of any(one) that’s not in a great mood. That’s something that’s always been a really concern for me is that displaced aggression at a child. They’re the most precious and most innocent. That’s just something we’re trying to make sure our guys are aware of, what’s the right thing to do at the right time.”

Baylor has seen two players convicted of sexual assault since 2012: linebacker Tevin Elliott and defensive end Sam Ukwuachu. Elliott is currently serving a 20 year sentence, while Ukwuachu was sentenced to six months. Given how Ukwuachu’s conviction started a saga of how much Baylor knew about his violent past when he transferred from Boise State, it was clear that something had to be done.

This sign isn’t much in terms of action, but it also makes it clear that Briles and the administration are sick and tired of their football players not respecting women.
