Maurice Smith’s mom says Nick Saban is blocking Georgia transfer

Nick Saban is reportedly preventing a member of his football team from transferring to a former assistant’s new program.

According to the mother of Alabama Crimson Tide defensive back Maurice Smith, Saban is blocking his transfer to join former Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs.

“He wants to go to Georgia. Period,” Samyra Smith told the Atlanta Journal Constitution. “That’s where he wants to go.

“The university is continuing to be resistant to any request to release my son. That’s where we are. In [Saban’s] mind, the best decision is for him to stay here. And he doesn’t think anything other than that is best for the kid.”

Smith worked with Alabama’s first-team defense through the spring and appeared poised to become a key contributor.

However, Smith appears to believe the best opportunity for success as he looks to finish his collegiate career is by joining his former defensive coordinator in Athens.

If Saban eventually grants Smith his release, Smith would be eligible to play immediately as a graduate transfer.

Of course, Saban could also decide not to release Smith from his scholarship which would force him to play for the Crimson Tide this season. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, but hopefully it is in the best interest of the student-athlete.
