Kirby Smart thanks SEC for Maurice Smith waiver

On Friday, the SEC granted defensive back Maurice Smith a waiver that will allow him to move from the Alabama Crimson Tide to Georgia Bulldogs as a graduate transfer.

The decision put an end to the ongoing saga which began when Nick Saban initially denied Smith his release. All along, all Smith wanted was to finish his college career at Georgia under the direction of his former Alabama defensive coordinator, Kirby Smart.

Now that the waiver has been granted, Smith can finish his career where he chooses and his new head coach is ready for everyone to be able to move on.

Smart’s statement read:

I want to express appreciation to Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey for granting the waiver which will allow Maurice Smith to pursue his dreams at the University of Georgia as a graduate transfer. This has been a difficult situation to navigate and we are grateful to all who have been involved in bringing it to a resolution. Now that it is behind us, we are all anxious to move forward.

Who knows, maybe this adds another layer to the SEC rivalry.

Smith and his new team are set to kickoff the 2016 college football season in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
