When will Conor McGregor return to the UFC and who will his opponent be?
Those are two questions that have been in the minds of mixed martial arts fans since the UFC lightweight champion fell short in his foray into into boxing against Floyd Mayweather.
There was initially some hope that McGregor could return to the UFC in December, but head coach John Kavanaugh hinted it may not be until 2018 that we see “The Notorious” make his return to the Octagon.
UFC president Dana White has since hinted otherwise, so the timeline for his return is still in doubt, but what about a potential opponent?
If you ask Conor McGregor, there are a couple of names on his mind.
Speaking to Entertainment.ie, McGregor revealed who he thinks is his next opponent. While he mentioned there are some boxers and a trilogy fight with Nate Diaz that could make sense, the one man he believes is in his immediate future is interim title holder Tony Ferguson.
“I know there are many contenders in the UFC. There are many boxing contenders as well. What interests me is certainly a UFC bout, certainly a defense of my lightweight title,” McGregor said.
“There is a fighter [Tony Ferguson] with the interim lightweight belt. I feel that will be next. We’ll see how negotiations go.”
McGregor also revealed that he is currently in contract negotiations.
“I feel to legitimize the belt — there’s an interim champion, I’m the unified champion — I feel that will be next. We are currently in contract negotiations and we’ll see where it goes,” he added.
