Former Vols football coach Butch Jones had his fair share of interesting moments while at Tennessee, but nothing stood out more than his bizarre “champions of life” quote after his team continuously underachieved. It’s pretty clear that former running back Alvin Kamara did not forget.
“They’ve won the biggest championship, and that’s the championship of life,” Jones said during a press conference that went on to be a laughing stock in the college football world.
Seemingly out of the blue over the weekend, Alvin Kamara took to social media to troll Jones for his old quote by sending a message on Twitter to former Vols teammate Jalen Reeves-Maybin. It’s pretty wild to think that Jones’ former players are still able to have a laugh over the absurdity of the now infamous quote.
Reeves-Maybin appeared to be caught off at first and chimed back:
And it turns out Kamara was just being a nice guy — and a brilliant Twitter troll.
While the two players didn’t reach the level of success they were hoping for while at Tennessee, Kamara has had no issues developing into a high-level player. In his first year for the New Orleans Saints, Kamara proved to be one of the most dynamic players in the entire NFL while going on to be the NFL Rookie of the Year.
Reeves-Maybin, meanwhile, was a role player on the Detroit Lions defense — recording 30 tackles, .5 sacks, and a forced fumble — and looks to play an even bigger role in 2018.
