With hazing and bullying at the forefront of conversation lately when it comes to athletics, a new report has come out that claims one of the greatest of all-time was a victim during his time in college.
According to Starr’s wife Cherry, the back injury suffered by Bart came via an “initiation event” back in 1954 for Varsity Letterman.
“He was hospitalized at one point in traction,” Cherry said via NBC Sports. “That was in the days when they were initiated into the A-Club, and they had severe beatings and paddling. From all the members of the A-Club, they lined up with a big paddle with holes drilled in it, and it actually injured his back.”
Former Alabama tight end Nick Germanos backed up this claim with a simple comment of, “It was hell.”
It’s a sad revelation to see, but not all that surprising. Hazing, whether we like it or not, has been around for decades because “that’s how things were done.” It’s only until recently that people started to express concern about hazing in the world of sports and elsewhere.
