Baylor (9-1) moved up in the rankings ladder to No. 5 in the AP Poll after outscoring (5-6) Oklahoma State 49-28 in a classic Big 12 shootout. It took only two drives into the first quarter before the Bears celebrated their first TD. Quarterback Bryce Petty completed a 65 yard pass to Jay Lee to go up 7-0 on the Cowboys. Oklahoma State couldn’t respond and Petty fired again with a 54 yard pass to Corey Coleman for the Bears’ second TD. OSU got on the board with a run and score from Desmond Roland making the score 7-14 in Baylor’s favor, but Baylor fired back not long after as running back Devin Chafin punched it in for two yards and a TD to close out the first quarter.
After that the game remained close as OSU held Baylor scoreless until deep into the second quarter. But Petty continued to move Baylor down to OSU’s end zone and again Chafin ran for seven yards and the TD making the score 28-7 with little time left in the second quarter. Slowly but surely OSU fought back as QB Mason Rudolph completed a eight-yard pass to David Glidden for a TD to end the half 14-28 Baylor.
Just when Baylor fans were starting to get anxious, the Bears pulled away in the second half. OSU’s defense couldn’t contain Baylor’s running game as Shock Linwood ran for 11 yards and the TD deep in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 35-14,
The fourth quarter was an unimpressive one for Oklahoma State. Chafin continued to run all over OSU’s defense and scored again late making the score 14-42. OSU didn’t quite give up and scored back-to-back TD’s making the score 28-42 late in the fourth, but time quickly ran out for the Cowboys.
To close out the game, Petty had a nice 21 yard run and TD, pushing the final score to 28-49. The Bears jumped to No. 5 in the AP Poll with the win, and fans anticipate a similar poll position when the latest College Football Playoff Rankings are announced today.
Baylor has two games remaining this season against Texas Tech and Kansas State; Oklahoma State will finish off the season on the road against the Oklahoma Sooners on December 6.
