The mighty have fallen from the ranks of the unbeaten and it seems like a new era is on the rise in the SEC. Ole Miss is very good, LSU is very good. But who is the best this week? Let’s find out!
5. Tennessee
The Volunteers had a nice bounce back game after letting go of a two touchdown lead against the Oklahoma Sooners just a week ago. Joshua Dobbs is finally finding a good rhythm and Jaylen Hurd looks very good running the ball. If they get their running attack going early, the Volunteers should have no problem handling the Florida Gators this weekend.
On defense, they must get more pressure on the quarterback this week. Florida quarterback Will Grier showed that he can’t throw well under duress, so if they can get to him, the Volunteers should be able to force more turnovers this week.
4. Georgia
I will channel Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for just a second here: FINALLY…Good quarterback play has come back to Athens. Greyson Lambert was absolutely on fire last week against South Carolina as he was literally a completion away from being perfect. Lambert broke the NCAA record for completion percentage at over 96 percent. If he keeps playing like that, there is no doubt that the Bulldogs will be playing in Atlanta come early December.
As for the defense, they are looking equally as good as the offense. Dominick Sanders intercepted a pass in his second straight game and nearly took that one to the house as well. The Bulldogs have a chance to put some more big numbers on the board this week before welcoming in the dejected Crimson Tide October 3.
3. Texas A&M
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, Kyle Allen is the best quarterback in the SEC and it won’t be long before he is considered the best quarterback in the country. As long as he has Christian Kirk to throw to, the Aggies’ offense is going to be just fine for the rest of the season. Allen and his offense have their first real test as they take on Arkansas this week and that should be a good indicator on how well he performs under pressure.
Myles Garret once again lived up to his NFL hype last week and he will need to continue playing like he is to give his team a shot in the SEC West. Having a big day against one of the best offensive lines in the country this Saturday could be all he needs to catapult him into stardom.
2. Ole Miss
Ole Miss’s offense was just as electric as they have been in their first two games. You don’t see teams scoring 43 points on a Kirby Smart-led defense very often. Chad Kelly was terrific on the night against Alabama and he proved that he is ready to lead this team in contention for College Football Playoff.
The Nkemdiche brothers were very good last year and they haven’t missed a beat this year. Robert is looking like a bonafide top five pick for the NFL Draft next May and Denzel is working his way into the first round as well. These two are just the tip of the iceberg in the Landsharks defensive unit and that doesn’t bode well for the rest of the SEC.
1. LSU
LSU is looking like the team that everyone has predicted them to be for much of the offseason. Leonard Fournette is without a doubt the favorite for the Heisman Trophy now and quarterback Brandon Harris is fitting into Cam Cameron’s offense nicely and he should get the chance to throw a little more against a weak Syracuse secondary.
Defensively, the Tigers are back in prime form. They caused three turnovers against Auburn last week, while recording three sacks as well. Offense may be their strong point right now, but Kendell Beckwith and Rickey Jefferson are holding down the fort in the defensive backfield right now and that should translate into a whole slew of wins for the Tigers.
