Alabama Football: VanDarius Cowan Dismissed From Team

The Alabama football program announced that four-star freshman linebacker VanDarius Cowan has been dismissed from the program. The top freshman defender was dismissed less than a month after being arrested for misdemeanor assault at a Tuscaloosa bar.
The official reason given for Cowan’s dismissal was a violation of team rules.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced the news on Monday.
“VanDarius has been dismissed from the team and is no longer a part of our football program due to a violation of team rules,” Saban said in a statement. “Each of us has a responsibility to represent The University of Alabama in a first-class way, and failure to meet those standards can’t be tolerated. We wish VanDarius the very best in the future.”
Cowan was accused of punching 26-year-old Jesse Ray in the face outside of High Tide bar in Tuscaloosa. Ray claimed he did not provoke the attack.
The 6-foot-4 outside linebacker was ranked the No. 4 player at his position in the Class of 2017.
