Nick Saban on Kirby Smart: ‘Like a son moving away from home’

Following the College Football Playoff championship game on Monday, Alabama head coach Nick Saban will have to see Kirby Smart leave town to take the Georgia Bulldogs’ head coaching position. It is not an easy thing for Saban to see happen and he compared it to a son moving away from home during a recent interview.

“You know, it’s sort of like you have a son and he’s moving away, and you want to see him do really, really well because we all go through stations of life where things change, so now someone else will have a better – an opportunity,” Saban said. “Kirby will have an opportunity. Somebody will have an opportunity to do what he does, and hopefully we can provide a little leadership and guidance that will help him along the way have a chance to be successful.”

Smart has been a big part of Alabama as their defensive coordinator and has built a very good defense.

Looking ahead at the future for both parties, things are still going to be very bright. Smart is getting one of the top head coaching jobs in college football and the Crimson Tide will find another gem to take over the defensive coordinator role. Neither side will regret these decisions.
